Cerro El Morado (4674 m) – 4 Days Expedition

Overview

Cerro El Morado (4674 m) is one of the most aesthetic and accessible high peaks in the central Andes, located in the Cajón del Maipo valley near Santiago.

This 3-day expedition follows the classic route through Morales Valley, combining glacier approach, high mountain camping, and a non-technical summit ascent. It is an excellent objective for climbers looking to gain experience at altitude in a glaciated environment.

The climb is non-technical but physically demanding, requiring good fitness and basic mountain experience.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Approach to Base Camp (2800 m)

Transfer from Santiago to Parque Arenas sector.

Approach hike through Valle de Las Arenas, where base camp is established.

  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Focus: approach and acclimatization
Day 2 – High Camp & Acclimatization Laguna El Morado (~3300 m)

Ascent towards high camp on the glacier moraine.

Optional acclimatization hike depending on group condition.

  • Hiking time: 2 – 3 hours
  • Focus: altitude adaptation and preparation
Day 3 – Summit Attempt (4674 m) & Descent

Early alpine start (around 2 AM)

Summit push via glacier route to reach the top of Cerro El Morado.

Descent back to base camp to rest-

  • Total effort: 10- 12 hours
  • Focus: summit and descent
Day 4 – Descent & Return to Santiago

Descent to trailhead and transfer back to the city.

Lunch in a Traditional Restaurant in Cajón Del Maipo.

  • Hiking time: 3–5 hours
  • Transfer to Santiago: 3 hours
