Cerro El Plomo (5.424m) – 4 Days Expedition

Overview

Cerro El Plomo (5424 m) is the highest peak visible from Santiago and one of the most iconic mountains in the central Andes of Chile.

This 4-day expedition is designed to safely reach the summit following the classic route, combining progressive acclimatization, high mountain experience, and the ascent of a sacred Inca mountain.

The climb is considered non-technical but physically demanding, making it an ideal first 5000m peak for those looking to enter high-altitude mountaineering.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Approach & Base Camp (Piedra Numerada – 3300 m)

Transfer from Santiago to the mountains (La Parva / Valle Nevado area).
Short approach hike to Piedra Numerada, where we establish base camp.

  • Hiking time: 2–3 hours
  • Focus: acclimatization and logistics

Day 2 – Acclimatization & Move to High Camp (Federación – 4100–4400 m)

Progressive ascent to high camp (Refugio Federación area).
Optional acclimatization hike depending on group condition.

  • Hiking time: 4–6 hours
  • Focus: altitude adaptation

Day 3 – Summit Attempt (5424 m)

Early alpine start (around 3 AM).
Summit push via the normal route, passing key landmarks like:

  • Refugio Agostini
  • Pirca del Inca

Return to high camp after summit.

  • Total effort: 8–10 hours
  • Focus: summit

Day 4 – Descent & Return to Santiago

Descent to trailhead and transfer back to the city.

  • Hiking time: 3–5 hours
