Introduction to Sport Climbing

Overview

This workshop is designed for individuals looking to begin sport climbing on rock safely in any climbing area. It also covers the risks and associated situations that can occur during this type of climbing and how to prevent them.

DATE AND MODALITY

This workshop consists of 4 in-person sessions featuring instructional lessons followed by supervised practice of maneuvers on the rock. Sessions will run from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Limited spots available

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To learn and master the maneuvers necessary to climb sport single-pitch routes efficiently and safely. To understand safety measures and prevention of typical incidents/situations during an ascent. To build autonomy for independent sport climbing on rock.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  • Plan a sport climbing trip to be prepared and climb mindfully regarding oneself, the climbing partner, and the environment.
  • Understand the minimum equipment for sport climbing, technical specifications, and proper usage.
  • Master essential knots and their applications for sport climbing.
  • Learn basic techniques and maneuvers for sport climbing.
  • Principles for climbing anchors/belay stations.
  • Effective communication and voice commands.
  • Top-rope climbing practice and associated maneuvers.
  • Lead climbing and bolting/equipping routes.
  • Safe belaying techniques using various devices.
  • Learning to fall correctly to prevent associated injuries.
  • Understanding the duties of each member of the climbing pair.
  • Identifying and anticipating risks associated with outdoor sport climbing.
  • Understanding the psychological aspects involved in rock climbing.
  • Practicing maneuvers and techniques with a partner on the rock under safe supervision.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

  • Personal climbing gear (helmet, harness, climbing shoes, headlamp).
  • Single dynamic rope (60m minimum).
  • Belay system (ATC, Grigri, Smart, etc.).
  • Personal anchor system (tether) with carabiner.
  • Suitable athletic clothing for the activity.
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 50+).
  • Food and hydration (trail snacks, lunch, and at least 1.5 liters of water).
  • Trash bag (Leave No Trace).
  • Camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and tent).

REQUIREMENTS

  • Health status compatible with physical activity.
  • Prior climbing experience (gym, wall, or rock) is recommended.
  • A strong desire to learn.
  • Completed registration form and risk assumption waiver.
  • Adherence to safety instructions provided by the instructors.
